US History I Course Description
The purpose of the US History course is to develop greater understanding of the evolution of the culture of the United States through a close and analytical study of eras, events, individuals, and forces of change. This understanding is advanced through a combination of selective factual knowledge and appropriate analytical skills. The knowledge based covered includes pre-colonial America through the US Civil War using a thematic methodology. Skills emphasized include: critical reading, note taking, testing skills, analytical writing, project based learning, and seminar. This course demands strong student responsibility in studying and homework. The course is challenging and requires students to take greater responsibility for their learning by participating in problem-seeking and problem-solving, scholarly and creative processes, critical analysis and application, reflective thinking, and the expression and defense of ideas generated through the study of the content.
